Tomma is a scenic island on the coast of Helgeland. It's located 66 degrees and 16 minutes north, 12 degrees and 48 minutes east. It's nearby the Artic Circle and you can see the midnightsun during the midsummer. The island is surrounded by blue sea and has mountains that rises almost thousand metres high. With it's fantastic nature and hospitable inhabitants, this is the island you want to visit again and again.
Tomma is the largest of three islands in Nesna municipality. Even though it's the largest, it's small with only 50 square kilometres. The population is 120 people. Most of them live in Husby, where you can find the grocery and the school. The school was bulit in 1984 and has a swimmingpool. When the pupils have graduated from 10th grade they must move to get further education.
Earlier, fishing was the most important source of incom for the inhabitants, but now it's only one fisherman left. The most important source of incom now is farming; production and sheep. Other sources of incom are salmon and catfish breeding. There is also a firm, Tomma Aluminium, that builds boats (8-50 feet ).
Tomma is known for its lovely nature. Here you can go for short or longer walks in the woods or go hiking in the mountains. The island is mostly known for it's highest mountain Tomskjevelen (922 metres above sea level). From the peak you can see all the way to the island Vega in south and Lofoten in north. Places like Finnvik Valley and Forslands Valley is well known. The Forslands Valley is nice for a day trip. This is also the starting point for climbing Tomskjevelen. A nice trip is to walk from The Finnvik Valley to the Forslands Valley. There is a few caves hidden in the nature. You can also find graves from the Viking Age. Tomma has the largest south Sami "gamme". It was ment for the Olympics in 1994 but ended on Tomma insted. The Finnvik Valley has nice beaches for sunbathing and swimming. People come here to relax and enjoy themselves.
